Would you like to know who the real Christine in the Phantom of the Opera was? Ingegerd Björklund has the answer.

The Swedish Singer Christina Nilsson (1843-1921) commenced her career as a poor fiddler girl. After studies in Paris, she made a very successful debut. She established herself as one of the leading Sopranos of her time and she was asked to sing at the inauguration of the Metropolitan Opera House, New York, in 1883. Her life story was really fascinating. She was a Mega star like Madonna, at the same time as she was a famous opera Diva. She was treated like a royalty, and no one can experience such crowds today, as she had. An open air performance in Stockholm in 1885 ended in a big tragedy, as 20 people were killed!

In 2001 Ingegerd Björklund was awarded a PhD on a dissertation entitled

The Compelling
– A Performance-Oriented Study of the Singer Christina Nilsson.
(ISBN: 91 8597 60-9   ISSN 0348-0879)

The same year the CD was released
Ingegerd Björklund sings from Christina Nilsson’s repertoire
Estonian Chamber Strings
Peeter Paemurru: Conductor, Piia Paemurru: Piano
(MU 64)
Music by Gounod, Verdi, Joncières, Thomas, Balfe, Faure, Beethoven, Braga, Sullivan and Nilsson.

One year earlier Björklund had published the biography
Den oemotståndliga –en Christina Nilsson biografi
(ISBN: 91 89390 10-5)

Dr. Björklund’s research has been received with greatest interest and her work was the subject for every possible TV and radio show in Sweden for a long time, since she was the very first Swedish Singer who was awarded a PhD on an elder colleague. After the dissertation Ingegerd Björklund has toured the world with her very popular Christina Nilsson- shows.

Comments from the newspapers:

Ms. Ingegerd Björklund, a most talented soprano and actress, made a trip ... to San Francisco to entertain us. She did it royally and with a great flair of style. Needless to say it was an evening to be remembered for a long time to come for all of us who was fortunate enough to be present ...
